The Way

The Way:

Who can deny that there is so much pain and suffering in our world?  Perhaps even now, right in your own life, there is no peace, there is no real satisfaction, and feelings of being alive seem fleeting.  Perhaps the doctor has given you distressing news, or the cash machine has just denied you and you find the month is longer than your last pay.

The fact is that life is tough!  It really isn’t for sissies!  But take comfort in knowing that it is often in these times that we will reach out for help from someone or something beyond ourselves.  This is a great thing!  For now, even now, Jesus the Savior is anxiously waiting for you to just begin to ask for help, and even before you finish forming the first word in your mouth He has reached to you!  To Him it does not matter how horrible you have been, it does not matter to Him how evil you have lived, He is willing to let all that go and lovingly accept you right where you are.  Try it and see!  God is not a man that He should try and deceive you for what He has promised that He shall perform!

The Bible is God’s thoughts, desires, and plans for us written down so we can have life, and as He describes it, “More Abundantly.”  In His Word, there are some things that we need to do in order to begin this life that is lacking nothing:

  1. Recognized that you need Him.  The punch that often knocks out the boxer is the one he never saw coming.  To see it is to have the ability to prepare for it.  God’s Word prepares us for this new life in Jesus by showing us how far we are initially from Him.  (Rom 3:23)  “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”  The Scriptures say, (Rom 3:10)  “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.”  Because we are so disappointing to God (because of our sins) none of us deserves His love or Heaven above.  But He is willing to forgive us and wash us so we can be.  If you never acknowledge this, you will never receive God’s forgiveness for your sins, and you will never enter into rest now or into Heaven later.

  1. Ask Jesus to forgive you.  (Joh 3:16)  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  Then the Bible says, (1 Jn 1:9) “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  I know it sounds awfully a lot like religious talk.  But the truth conveyed in these verses is that if you ask, God will wipe away your faulty past and let you start over because He loves you so much.  Jesus took the anger of a Holy God upon Himself, and because He did, you don’t have to.

    1.  Here is a way to pray if you are not sure how:  “Lord, I thank you for paying for the sins I have committed.  I believe that you loved me enough to pay for all my imperfect living, and sinful ways, that you died for me.  I also believe that you are willing to forgive me, so I give my life to You.  Please teach me the right way to live.  Thank You for all that you are doing right now in my life.  Amen”

3.   Turn away from your sins.  You cannot keep doing the same old things that you used to do, and expect that you will end up with different results.  This is one definition of insanity.  We need to begin to live in a way that reflects the changes that Jesus has made in your life.  The Scriptures say, (1Jn 3:9)  “God’s children cannot keep on being sinful. His life-giving power lives in them and makes them his children, so that they cannot keep on sinning.”  This does not mean that we will never sin, but that we cannot afford to go back to a sinful lifestyle.  Putting your confidence in Jesus means that willing to stop living as you once did, and now you are going to start living to please God who has forgiven you.  You can have this assurance, if you obey God, you are a Child of God and will one day have eternal life in Heaven!
